Internet Marketing
Internet marketing is an interesting subject. There are a number of internet marketing tools available online, but what tools you need often depends on your internet marketing strategy. Different strategies will require different tools.
So it seems that your fist step should be to come up with a solid internet marketing strategy. This strategy should create a solid base from which to work, and clearly define your goals. When we talk about goals, we are talking specifically about your keywords and keyword phrases that you are going to want to rank well for in the search engines.
So first things first, let's talk about choosing your keywords properly. None of the other stuff will matter if this step is not done correctly and with some thought. If you design your site around keywords that get no searches, you will have no traffic. If you choose keywords that are too competetive for your resources, you will be frustrated when your site has a hard time ranking well for those words.
To start with, brainstorm as many keywords as possible. Make a large list, and try to get creative. Think about what you would type in if you were searching for your product or site.
Once you have this list, go over to google's keyword tool. It is free, and is located on their adwords site. It is a great tool, and will show you search volume and how competetive a particular term is. Put your whole list of words into this tool, click search, then change the phrase match to "exact".
You will now be presented with your keywords and phrases, plus many more. Spend some time on this, try other searches that are based on the information returned. Your goal here is to choose keywords with good search volume and low competetion. Make sure they are relevent terms. Additionally, some terms with low search volume may be good choices if the phrase indicates a person is ready to buy.
For example, "red size 10 nike shoes for sale" is very specific, and probably does not get a high search volume. It may be a good phrase to target, however, as this searcher is likely to purchase in the near future.
